Trends
• What parts of the market do we see growing? • What career paths seem to be the "hottest"? • What kinds of companies would we buy into if we had the chance?
We are not in the business of predicting the future, but we do watch the activity in the BC tech market so that we can help our clients make good decisions and bring value to the work we do each day. We thought you might like to see some of the data we’ve collected based on our recent work in the BC tech sector. This is by no means an exhaustive list and we don’t pretend to have all the answers – but for those of you who are tracking trends, here is some raw data that might be useful to you:
*Recruiting Activity by sector:
Commercial Software 60% Hardware 16% Online/Web2.0 14% Cleantech 10%
*Recruiting Activity by Functional Area:
Development 37% Mgmt/Exec 24% Sales 19% PrdMgmt/Mkting 12% Ops/Svcs 8%
*Please note that the totals may add up to more than 100% due to rounding.
Keeping in mind that this is simply a snapshot of the most recent few months, we shouldn’t view this as statistically significant, or valid from a scientific point of view. But it is interesting to note that Cleantech and Online make up almost a quarter of sector activity – 2 sectors that may not have even made the list 18 months ago. While commercial software (B2B) continues to dominate our marketplace, these two emerging areas will be ones to watch. Functionally, it’s not surprising to see a heavy focus on development as it has always been a strength in BCs tech industry; however, given the maturing of local companies we might have expected the level of activity related to Sales recruiting to be higher. Will we see that push to reach new markets and expand market share in the coming year? We will certainly be tracking these numbers, and hopefully be able to continue to put them into perspective for ourselves and for you.
