By Don Safnuk, President/CEO Corporate Recruiters Ltd. Don can be contacted at don@corporate.bc.ca

Having started in 1980 this is Corporate Recruiters 5th recession. We know from past experience that the next few quarters will likely be fluid. Accurate, real time, local talent and general business market information will be difficult to access, which of course makes short term and even midterm forecasting difficult at best. We contacted the 70+ CEO's who attended the recent Acetech conference to assess interest in participating in a survey expected to provide current and relevant data via a series of short 5 minute surveys at the end of each quarter in 2009. Customer-Focused Recovery

By Brent Holliday, Technology Practice, Capital West Partners.  Brent can be contacted at brent@capwest.com

Now that we are in the doldrums of the biggest downturn of our lifetimes, what can a technology company do to improve business?  Hopefully if you were forced to reduce expenses, you focused on stretching or reducing engineering/development dollars and kept commission based sales people happy with investment in generating more leads. Helping Founders and Builders Work the Reins Together

By Jim VollettVollett Executive Coaching.  Jim can be contacted at Jim@Vollett.com

Whether through inexperience, or a reluctance to relay bad news and to take responsibility for it, there are times when management is less than completely forthcoming with the Board.  These occasions test the mettle of the directors, both in evaluating how serious the incident may be, and what to do about it.  Let’s look at some examples.

The hottest topic in the market is social networking and the vast number of ways it can be leveraged for your business. Pretty much every business involves asking questions or doing some sort of research to solve a problem or satisfy a need. From something as simple as a "what color do our customers prefer" or to something a bit more complex like "do we charge prime-plus or prime-minus when booking inter-company loans to an offshore subsidiary." The quality of people you need to talk to become more important when the questions become more complex or obscure. If the person with the right knowledge isn’t nearby, then you need to solicit an answer from outside and social networks can help you find the right person to ask.

Business Executives and the Nonprofit

By Cindy Pandini, Executive Director, BC Social Venture Partners (BC SVP).  Cindy can be contacted at cpandini@bctsvp.com

Nonprofit goals are complex and always intangible. The goals are hard to measure, hard to quantify and often aligned with behaviour -- not just a cheque book. For example, look at homelessness; you can provide a warm, safe environment for someone. Will they stay? Will they be able to move from assistance to self sufficiency?  There is a wide chasm in the answer to that question. Money only solves part of the problem.
