The Opportunity

Fatigue Science is the global leader in the measurement and scoring of fatigue and is positioned to have a significant impact in improving safety in the workplace and the quality of life for consumers. Their patent protected technology and suite of applications is at the forefront of the science and continues push the boundaries. To continue to extend their lead in the industry, Fatigue Science is looking to add an exceptional technology leader to the team.

Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President of Technology is responsible for setting and delivering on the technology strategy for Fatigue Science. The VP, Technology oversees the Engineering Department’s workflow and projects enabling our dynamic Product Roadmap.  The role is also responsible for establishing and maintaining procedures to ensure a high standard of quality and reliability in product designs and ultimately in our software applications.  In addition, the VP Technology will drive the IP and Trade Secrets strategy, portfolio management and patenting processes.

The Engineering Department consists of a multidisciplinary team of engineers working on mobile and web applications that leverage complex algorithms and machine learning.  In addition, the team manages the cloud-based infrastructure and related processing speed, reliability, efficiency and security matters. The team delivers our iOS, Android, iPad and web-based applications, and support the code base of our proprietary SAFTE model. The team also supports integration with our wearable hardware device and is responsible for our IT and information security program.

Position Description

As a key member of the leadership team the VP Technology will review and align the technology roadmap and will shape the strategy of the entire organization and contribute beyond the scope of software engineering.

The primary responsibilities will be to:

  • Establish a technology vision for Fatigue Science, based on wide perspective and reach experience

  • Manage the R&D budget: long and short-term planning, forecasting, monitoring and reporting

  • Define, build and manage the engineering organization that is both effective focused on the right targets) and efficient (quality, throughput)

  • Implement formal processes to support new product introduction, product strategy, and sustaining engineering.

  • Define and execute the solution architecture

  • Ensure the optimal application of technology and engineering resources to meet product development and customer requirements to fulfill the delivery of the Product Roadmap.

  • Provide technical direction and oversight for the engineering development.

  • Manage the day-to-day activities of the Engineering Department.

  • Represent the Engineering Department to our executive and customers.

  • Represent Fatigue Science as required at customer meetings, conferences, and trade shows, including public speaking engagements.

  • Develop and maintain an IP strategy.

  • Oversee our IT and Information Security programs.

Key Qualifications

A primary focus is the level of exceptional interpersonal and communications skills expected at this leadership level. We require a proactive, influential, communicative leader with the ability to articulate effectively at the Executive Team level as well as with multiple disciplines within and outside the Company. Complex technical information ideas will be articulated, both orally and in writing, to a variety of audiences.

  • B.Sc. in Computer Science, Electrical or Software Engineering (MSc preferred).

  • 10 years in progressive software leadership roles leading, coaching, mentoring and developing multi-disciplinary engineering development teams located across Canada and the US.

  • 5+ years of practical experience with cloud technologies (including AWS) and mobile technologies.

  • Vision and leadership to understand new trends and innovations in relevant technology, anticipate the future technology requirements and the impact on the product, and ensure the engineering team is structured to meet the associated corporate goals.

  • Strong analytical skills and technical competence to understand multi-disciplined complex products and develop a vision for the future.

  • Cross-functional experience working with marketing, sales, finance and product management to develop corporate goals as a member of the executive leadership team.

  • Experienced in a high growth software company and able to reconcile immediate goals and targets with rigorous methodology and consistency needed to build and maintain solid systems.

  • Understanding of Product Development concepts, has a strong continuous improvement mindset, and has implemented design libraries and best practices.

  • IP and Trade Secret Strategy; good experience strategically determining timing and content for IP, trades and patents, with a background of writing and filing patents.

  • Strong track record of successful product delivery and program management; skilled at meeting or exceeding aggressive product delivery date milestones.

  • Has improved time to market of new products, understands and uses cross functional teams to deliver products to market

  • Organizational and process design expertise – comfortable driving process improvement initiatives to ensure predictable results.

  • Has effectively, hired, inspired, developed and retained highly qualified leaders and staff with skills in the relevant technology areas.

  • On-going ability to conduct design review, with a background delivering strong, clean code with minimal technical debt.
