Vice President Engineering — Deep Tech
Onsite, Vancouver BC.
Our client is a deep tech engineering services firm where the problems do not have existing answers. Clients come here because the work is genuinely beyond what they can build internally, and the margin for error is low. That is the point, and it is what draws exceptional engineers here in the first place.
Engineering is not a department here. It is the product. And until now, it has operated without an executive-level engineering leader. That changes with this hire.
The Role
This is a builder's role. The VP Engineering will own operations, process, team development, and the evolution of a technically strong group into a fully realized engineering organization. The central challenge is specific: our client attracts engineers who are here for hard problems, not process. The right leader builds repeatable systems that make the work more scalable without making it less interesting, and drives adoption through coaching, not mandate.
What the Role Requires
10+ years of progressive engineering leadership across multidisciplinary teams
Direct experience inside a hardware product development consultancy, design firm, or R&D organization
Hands-on background spanning firmware, electronics, and physics
Has developed leaders, not just managed strong individuals; knows the difference
Understands how engineering decisions show up in the business: utilization, margin, and the sales pipeline that feeds it all
Who Thrives Here
The right person knows the difference between managing, developing, and leading. They listen before they lead, ask questions before offering answers, and get more satisfaction from watching the team exceed their own expectations than from solving the problem themselves. They are energized by what is in front of them, not sobered by it.
Our client is privately held and founder-operated. The people who set the standard still run the company.
If this is the problem you want to spend the next several years on, we would like to hear from you.
